During an exclusive conversation on SOS Radio Live, a sister company of SOS Magazine, we had the privilege of exploring the remarkable journey of Dr. Marlene Mack—uncovering the challenges she overcame, the milestones she achieved, and the profound impact of her work. Dr. Mack is a visionary educator, entrepreneur, artist, and an unwavering advocate for early childhood education. For over 25 years, she has been the driving force behind One Step Ahead Learning and Performing Arts Center (OSALC) in East Orange, New Jersey, a place where young minds flourish academically while being immersed in the world of creativity and performing arts.
Born in Montclair, NJ, and raised in Newark, NJ, Dr. Mack’s passion for education and service was evident from an early age. A graduate of Malcolm X Shabazz High School, she went on to pursue a degree in Special Education at South Carolina State University. There, she not only excelled academically but also made history as the first student to be crowned Miss South Carolina State Homecoming Queen for two consecutive years. A dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Dr. Mack actively participated in basketball, softball, and the debate club, honing the leadership skills that would define her future endeavors.
Turning Challenges into Triumphs
Her journey into early childhood education began with the birth of her children, when she transformed her home into a nurturing space for young learners. What started as an in-home daycare evolved into OSALC, a full-fledged learning and performing arts center that continues to provide parents with “peace of mind” while offering children a “home away from home.”
Each challenge Dr. Mack faced became an opportunity for growth. Whenever she encountered adversity—whether financial hardships, space limitations, or regulatory challenges—she emerged stronger, expanding her vision and impact. Her ability to turn obstacles into stepping stones has defined her success. Rather than allowing difficulties to hinder her mission, she has used them as fuel to push forward, opening new locations and strengthening her commitment to early childhood education and the arts.
“In every challenge, I saw an opportunity. The struggles didn’t stop me; they gave me the push to build something greater,” Dr. Mack shared during our exclusive interview on SOS Radio Live. “Each setback became a setup for a bigger comeback.”
A Unique Approach to Education
At One Step Ahead Learning and Performing Arts Center, Dr. Mack has created a holistic environment that blends academic excellence with enrichment activities. After school, students can choose from an impressive array of programs, including ballet, tap, hip-hop, karate, cooking, science club, sign language, and more. However, it is the performing arts program—integrated into the curriculum since 2005—that has had the most profound impact. Under Dr. Mack’s leadership, children gain confidence and self-expression through annual Christmas concerts, Black History Month productions, talent shows, and fashion showcases. These performances, attended by hundreds of parents, replicate professional productions, complete with stylists, wardrobe managers, stage directors, and vocal coaches. The outstanding talent displayed by her students has even garnered attention from America’s Got Talent.
“The arts give children a voice, a way to express themselves beyond words,” Dr. Mack said. “Seeing their confidence soar on stage is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work.”
A Legacy of Innovation and Recognition
Beyond her contributions to education, Dr. Mack is an innovator, holding a U.S. patent for Bottlemals, a unique invention designed to encourage children to drink more water. Her dedication has earned her numerous accolades, including the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award signed by President Joe Biden, a Doctorate of Humanitarian Award, and recognition from various organizations for her commitment to excellence in early childhood education. She is a proud member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the Association for Early Learning.
Words to Live By
During our interview, we asked Dr. Mack what advice she would give to those striving to achieve their dreams. She offered these words of wisdom: “Stay focused on your journey, keep going no matter what comes your way, know who you are, and don’t pay attention to the haters.”
When asked about the quote she lives by every single day, her response was both profound and reflective of her lifelong mission: “Take care of the kids, and you will never go hungry.”
Expanding the Vision
As she embarks on the expansion of One Step Ahead Learning and Performing Arts Center, Dr. Mack remains steadfast in her mission: to provide children with an educational experience rooted in faith, knowledge, and creativity.
Dr. Marlene Mack’s legacy is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose—an embodiment of what it means to be a true high-value woman.
