Take Back Your Yard

Summer is just about here, and we are all getting excited for all the outdoor activities that come with the wonderful weather—pool parties, backyard BBQs, s’mores by the fire… And just as all the fun really gets going—BUGS!

Mosquitoes and other insects can absolutely ruin our time outdoors. We want and need to protect ourselves against them. But can we do this without resorting to spraying chemicals and toxins on our yards and our bodies? We absolutely can! Mosquitoes do not like strong scents and will avoid them. There are plenty of herbs and flowers with strong scents. So, you can help drive mosquitoes away while making your yard beautiful. Some of the flowers are also pollinator flowers for bees, so that’s a double bonus.

Here are ten plants that you can put into the ground or in containers to help keep your yard mosquito-free! The best part is that most of these plants are also edible herbs so you can use them in your cooking!

  • Lavender
  • Catnip—this is also a good squirrel deterrent
  • Marigold
  • Sage
  • Allium—onion, chive, garlic
  • Basil
  • Rosemary
  • Lemongrass or Lemon Balm
  • Mint—this is a spreader, so best to grow in a container
  • Citronella

There are many insect repellents on the market now that do not use DEET, and they are very effective. Look for solutions with natural oils like geranium, lemon, eucalyptus, mint, and citronella. You can make your own by using a solution of water, witch hazel, and essential oils. This way you can pick the scents that work for you!

A good old-fashioned citronella candle is also great if you don’t have to worry about the flames.

One of my favorites is to have a fan blowing. The insects are too tiny to fight against the wind.

I hope this gives you a few ideas on how to have a great summer outdoors while keeping chemicals away from you and your yard!
