Born in the Philippines in 1962, Ferlie Almonte migrated to the U.S. in 1984 with $120 borrowed money in Traveler’s Cheques, in pursuit of the American Dream to provide a better life for her family. Despite early hardships, including her father leaving when she was young, Ferlie embraced responsibility and pursued education and career opportunities.

Charting New Territories: Career Evolution and Ambition

Ferlie’s career evolved from retail sales to healthcare, driven by a desire to provide for her family. With a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, she excelled in sales management before transitioning to the healthcare industry as a Respiratory Therapist. Balancing full-time work, schooling, and raising a child, Ferlie’s determination and discipline propelled her to success in her new career path.

Overcoming Adversity: Finding Opportunities Amidst Challenges

A turning point came after the 9/11 attacks, when Ferlie’s upscale retail job closed, leading her to pursue opportunities in healthcare. However, repeated exposure to occupational hazards caused lung damage, forcing her to shift careers once again. Despite setbacks, Ferlie remained resilient, finding new opportunities in pharmaceutical sales.

Trials and Tribulations : Navigating Personal Turmoil

Amidst career changes and challenges, Ferlie faced personal trials, enduring the turmoil of a challenging divorce. Despite this, she eventually found the courage to embrace love once again, only to be devastated by the loss of her new spouse to cancer shortly after their marriage. Nevertheless, despite the heartache, Ferlie’s unwavering spirit led her to embrace love once more.

The Battle Within: Fighting Cancer with Determination

However, Ferlie’s greatest challenge came when she received a cancer diagnosis. With unwavering positivity and determination, she embarked on a grueling treatment journey, undergoing surgeries, chemotherapy, and ongoing therapies. Despite the physical and emotional toll, Ferlie remained steadfast, buoyed by faith, positivity, and the support of loved ones.

Emerging triumphant: Resilience in Action

Throughout her journey, Ferlie’s resilience shone brightly. Despite the challenges, she continued to pursue her passions, even winning a patent amidst her health battles. After completing treatments, Ferlie’s indomitable spirit led her to compete in a pageant for the first time in her life. She made history as the first Asian to win Ms. NJ Senior America in the pageant’s 40-year history, finishing in the top 5 out of 49 at the Nationals. Additionally, she published her fifth book and got deeply involved in community service, exemplifying that there is hope and a bright life after cancer. Ferlie’s story serves as a testament to the power of resilience and the ability to turn adversity into opportunity, showing that we can choose to make our mess our message.
